At football stadiums across the country, thousands of rabid fans are seen each weekend pouring into parking lots hours before game time. They’re not there to grab autographs or to stake their spots in the stands. These fans are still outside, rain or shine. And at the crack of the beer can, they are busy setting up grills, opening coolers, staking team flags and folding out card tables that will soon be covered in rows of grilled meats, bowls of veggies and snacks, and various condiments. Yes, it’s tailgating season, and it’s never too late to pack some friends into the car or RV and head to the nearest stadium parking lot for America’s greatest pre-game tradition.
However, tailgating the right way can be a challenge even for the most seasoned pro. For those rookies just getting started, there’s nothing worse than eyeing your neighbor’s site with envy, wishing you’d been half as prepared. To make your tailgating adventure a success, you’ll need to plan ahead. Here’s some advice to get you ready in no time: Make “The List.” There’s nothing worse than forgetting ice for the cooler, charcoal for the grill or tickets for the game. A checklist is a great way to keep organized and ensure that you’ve packed everything.
Mother Nature. It may seem like common sense, but check the weather forecast before you head out the door. In cold weather, you can always shed a layer, but when you don’t have enough on, your tailgate can be downright miserable.
Keep it simple. Try to simplify your tailgate menu and setup. After all, tailgating is supposed to be fun for everyone, including the host, says Joe Cahn, the self proclaimed “commissioner of tailgating” and founder of the New Orleans School of Cooking. “The key to a successful tailgate is to keep it simple,” says Cahn, who has traveled more than 500,000 miles over 12 years in the name of mastering the parking lot party. “You never want to spend more time facing your grill than your friends.
