Hey, who’s the old broad with the top down?! That was my biggest fear when
I got my first convertible: Someday I’d be too old to drive it. I will never
forget that 89 Saab Turbo convertible pulling up in front of
me. My brother Tom arranged
the perfect match – me and my car -via a guy who buys at
auction.
“Look, Tom, when
he shows me the car,
don’t get disappointed when I don’t seem excited. I’m in
sales, so trust me, if I act all thrilled, I’ll have to pay
top dollar. Two minutes later, the red convertible pulls up,
and I, well, SCREAM.
The dealer knew a tough sale when he saw one. Why don’t you take it for the weekend and let me know on Monday? Needless to say, I paid top dollar.
And I never looked back. Well, actually,
I always look back. You never forget your first convertible. I
now drive a BMW 325i convertible – or is it a 328? (a lady
driver, I reserve the right to
get my model number wrong), and I am hooked, but the
sentimental favorite will always be my old Saab. When I see a
similar one on the street, I always go down the same
road.
